There is quite a story to tell of George: when Nev's Mum died George used to go to Nev and Judy's for Sunday lunch and one weekend we happened to be staying with Nev and Judy, so after lunch I asked George what he had done during the Second World War.

He told us that he'd been in Italy and one night, just before a big push the next day, he and some colleagues had been roasting a chicken over an open fire when the chimney caught light! The managed to put it out and played cards for the rest of the evening.

Next morning they advanced and all of George's colleagues were killed and he was captured and eventually ended up in a POW camp in Germany.

They were well treated, spending much of the day repairing damage that the RAF had caused during the previous night!

The guards would tell them when the Gestapo were due to arrive and were warned not to bring any odds and ends in from their work - bits of wood to burn etc.

When George went home Nev amazed me by telling us that George had never spoken about his war time experiences! After that he did speak about it again - but what a privilege to hear a POW story first hand!
