Robins in the garden and an etymology lesson: have you ever wondered why robins are called robin redbreast when their breasts are orange?

The reason is that orange as the name of a colour was unknown in English until the sixteenth century. See the Wikipedia article.

On two Saturdays in July members of PACT (Petersfield Area Churches Together) undertook pilgrimages to all the churches in PACT. This involved walking 15 miles each day, but we were well supplied with tea, coffee, cakes and meals by members of all the churches!

I sat on the deck one afternoon - with Pepi (on of our cats!) on my lap - and got these great photographs of our local robin.

Above, John is second from the right. See more photographs and details on the PACT web site.

Liz was able to join us for the second Pilgrimage - she's towards the right, holding her hat.

We left the deck for a moment and the cats, Pepi and her son Krispie took our seats. Sadly this was to be Krispie's last summer: he lost a lot of weight and was not looking after his fur so we in September took him to to the vets for a check up. The vet found what she was pretty certainly a cancerous tumour in his neck and we sadly agreed to have him put down.
We were with him at the last and he went very peacefully. A lovable rogue.
